Ahhh nothing gives you Summertime Chi vibes like a beautiful sunny day, the hum of house music, and pink tutus? Well, that’s exactly what happened on Saturday (August 19, 2017). The 4th Annual “Walk Where You Live for Breast Cancer Awareness 5k Run/Walk” presented by The Barbara Bates Foundation took place in Chicago’s Douglas Park. Barbara Bates is a well-known fashion designer in Chicago that has styled the likes of Oprah and Michael Jordan. Her foundation was established in 1999 and its overall goal is to uplift and encourage the disadvantaged and inner-city youth, which includes donating prom and other former wear. Being a breast cancer survivor herself, the walk was established in 2012 and has been growing ever since.
I didn’t stay at the walk for an extended period but it made a lasting impression. Being a South-sider, I’m not very privy to the West Side so I did a little exploring before venturing to the walk. I am a sucker for small details. Clusters of various shades of pink balloons were posted along the running/walking route, staff/volunteers stationed with what looked to be mannequins with pink tutus (which was darling), and at the “main” entrance gathered more friendly and inviting faces. As a black woman, it was so refreshing to see other black women with their daughters (and sons) together for such a worthy cause. I will definitively be back next year, not only for media coverage but as a participate.
